Jon Stewart on the NCAA

Excellent segment last night. Jon gives new meaning to the phrase “nothing but net,” has a nice digression on the “socialist” aspects of sports, notes how many big-time schools have made a “mockery’ of their supposed educational mission and the often ridiculous rules governing “impermissible benefits” and, for effect, closes with a video montage of coaches abusing players to the tune of “One Shining Moment.” As is often the case, the Daily Show provides more incisive analysis of much-talked about issues in a 6-7 minute segment than other news organizations manage in all of the endless air time they fill.

Speaking of impermissible benefits, if you haven’t read it already, here’s the SB Nation story on SEC bag men, detailing the shadow network of boosters that funnels large sums of cash to football recruits.
